Easy bird’s nests for kids: Healthier recipe in 15 minutes

April 2, 2021 by LA Cooquette | Leave a Comment

Close up of a few Easter bird's nests treats made with a paste of pitted dates, almonds and no added sugars.

Sweet Easter recipes can easily push us over the limit of recommended sugars and calories. I don’t need to stress how important is to eat better, we all know that, right? Still, I know that’s easier said than done.

In another post, I shared a few easy Easter recipes to prepare with your kids. However, I wanted to try a healthier treat than the ones found there, and found inspiration in a bird’s nests recipe by Happy Healthy Mamma blog.

The original recipe is gluten-free, vegan and it includes chocolate. However, I wanted to keep things very simple and I made my easy bird nests with fewer ingredients, as well as with some of my favorite Easter egg candy. You can choose yours accordingly.

I enjoyed preparing this recipe along with my 3-year old daughter, who’s always eager to cook. She enjoyed both making easy bird nests, as well as eating her homemade treats!

Cooking together is a nice activity for both, and I found it’s great for her age, to teach her bilingual words for the different ingredients, as well as to improve her motor skills with the child-safe steps of each recipe.

The recipe is quite simple and very easy to do. It took me about 15 minutes to make with my daughter’s help, but we weren’t in a hurry. In fact, we were in a more playful mood, so I am certain that it’s a good recipe when you’re short of time.

ingredients for easy bird's nests include pitted dates, robins eggs, almond butter, sliced almonds, maple syrup and shredded coconut

I like the ingredients because they are healthier than most treats. Almonds, for instance, have many benefits. Scientists claim they lower blood sugar levels, and reduce both cholesterol and blood pressure. Coconut is another superfood, rich in healthy fats and manganese.

Overall, I like this treat recipe because it’s made with healthy ingredients, yet it’s tasty and easy to make.

To blend the ingredients I prefer to use my food processor, although a powerful blender can do the work as well. Shaping the easy bird nests involves only a couple of steps. Once the dent is done, you can place some colorful Easter egg candy inside the nests, and you’ll bring a nice atmosphere to your table.

Find this easy bird’s nests recipe below and tell me how do you like it.

If you try it, share your experience in the comments!

Equipment

  • Food processor

Ingredients

  • 1.5 tbsp of almond butter (unsalted, creamy)
  • ½ cup and 2 tbsp of shredded coconut (unsweetened)
  • 1 cup (very full!) of organic pitted dates
  • 1 tbsp of maple syrup
  • ½ cup of sliced almonds
  • Your favorite Easter egg candy (we used Mini Robins Eggs, but keep in mind that you can find a gluten free or vegan alternative if you want)

Instructions

  • Process the dates, sliced almonds, almond butter, and shredded coconut very finely.
  • Put in a bowl so you can work more easily. Then, add maple syrup and some extra shredded coconut.
  • Mix all the ingredients with your hands and make dough balls.
  • Press each dough ball with your thumb, and make some finishing touchs to make it look more like a little nest.
  • Finally, place a couple of Easter egg candy in each nest, and treat yourself!
