Eating delicious Mexican food has become one of the best ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
The date is upon us, and with it come the trays of margaritas and the many misunderstandings about this fateful date in Mexican history.
What is Cinco de Mayo?
Now for a brief history lesson. On the fifth of May 1862, the city of Puebla valiantly fended off Napoleon III’s invading troops. The French emperor wanted to install a puppet government in Mexico and the Mexicans would have none of it!
The Battle of Puebla is recognized as a heroic feat of the Mexican people, who were far outnumbered and worse equipped than their European foes. This unlikely victory on Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexico’s strong and vibrant heritage.
So I figured that, for Cinco de Mayo, I would pick some of my favorite Mexican recipes.
Cinco de Mayo Mexican food recipes to celebrate at home
Celebrating Cinco de Mayo is a way to show our respect and admiration to Mexican culture. And food is, without a question, one of its most significant cultural icons for any country.
Mexican food is one of the most admired in the world. That means that it has had far too many adaptations too.
Some Mexicans still frown at Gordon Ramsay’s Huevos Rancheros recipe. And I’m sure it isn’t as bad as many other misrepresented staples of Mexican cuisine.
As an Honduran living in Mexico, I have enjoyed not only its people hospitality but its delicious and rich cultural heritage.
Since I started the blog a while ago, I have cooked several recipes inspired in Mexican cuisine. To celebrate this Cinco de Mayo, I picked my favorites so you can try something different. From an easy to make but rich Taco Dip, to an authentic Mexican staple, the Chancla Poblana.

Easy Prep Taco Dip
Back in the day, this recipe was the perfect tailgate sidekick. Nowadays we can enjoy some time outdoors safely, taking the proper measures.
Hopefully, we will be able to throw parties at home safely again, anytime soon.
Still, who needs a crowd to indulge in a Taco Dip?
Tamal cupcakes
Probably every country in Latin America has its own tamales recipe. In my country, Honduras, I grew up eating and loving them. If you want to check a typical Honduran nacatamal recipe, you can check my own here.
However, for Cinco de Mayo I create a much more easy and simple recipe. These tamal cupcakes are perfect to enjoy as an entree, appetizers, or a side dish.
And they are beautiful! Check the recipe here.
Chanclas Poblanas
A proper Cinco de Mayo celebration should account for Puebla’s brave people. And chanclas poblanas are a local favorite with a punch of taste.
I created a milder recipe, so if you aren’t up to the crazy heat of chile de árbol, you should try my reasonably hot chanclas poblanas.
Nopal and chorizo sopes
Mexican food is so rich and complex that we could try a different dish every day of the year without completing the full menu. So, why shouldn’t we try something different for Cinco de Mayo?
Sopes are one of those Mexican gastronomy hidden treasures, and my nopal and chorizo sopes recipe is a great way to have them.
Would you give them a try?
