Delicious Hot Chocolate Recipe: Ned Flanders’ Style

December 27, 2021 by LA Cooquette | 3 Comments

Hot chocolate is great to cheer up and share a comforting treat with our loved ones.

In The Simpsons Movie, Ned Flanders displays his unique character when he offers Bart a great mug of hot chocolate.

If you watched the movie or checked the short clip above, you surely felt tempted to try it at home. That’s why I developed this hot chocolate recipe, inspired by Ned Flanders’ endless enthusiasm and genius.

What you need to make Ned Flanders’ Hot Chocolate

roasting a marshmallow with a kitchen torch

Most gear is pretty essential for this recipe, except for the kitchen torch. Still, check below if you want to be sure that you have everything you need:

  • Spatula
  • Whisker
  • Grater
  • Kitchen torch
  • Saucepan

How to make great hot chocolate

whisking hot chocolate

Hot chocolate comes in many different ways depending on local traditions. Still, the basics are similar. Desired taste and consistency vary widely from one country to another. For instance, Spanish hot chocolate is very thick and rich. At the same time, the American version tends to be sweeter and more liquid.

I am adding sweetened condensed milk to the mix to recreate Flanders’ hot chocolate. As a result, it’s thicker and sweeter than usual. Additionally, we added half-and-half to get a richer body.

All the ingredients combined with milk chocolate chips and cocoa powder produce a smooth yet balanced taste.

Topping the chocolate with whipped cream

Now, some helpful tips:

  • Use a spat in the beginning, to ensure that chocolate doesn’t stick in the bottom of the saucepan. Then, when you get more liquid into the mix, use a whisker.
  • Don’t stop mixing the chocolate while cooking. It can be slow but do it non-stop. Additionally, watch the heat, so it’s low to medium, never high.
  • Add the toppings quickly because the chocolate melts the whipped cream in a few minutes.
  • Make a small cut on the marshmallow to stick the wafer. It’s almost impossible to get the marshmallow on top without “attaching” it to the wafer.

Check below the recipe for all the ingredients and more details.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • ½ cup condensed milk
  • ½ cup half and half cream
  • ½ cup chocolate powder
  • ¼ cup milk chocolate chips

Toppings

  • Whipped cream
  • 1 tbsp grated chocolate
  • 1 wafer cookie
  • 1 marshmallow

Instructions

  • Add milk chocolate chips and a bit of whole milk in a sauce pan and put to medium fire. Stir with a spat while the chocolate melts to avoid sticking to the bottom.
  • Add half and half and the rest of the milk when the chocolate melts. Mix well and add chocolate powder bit by bit, without stopping mixing. For a creamier texture and sweeter taste, add condensed milk.
  • Cook for ten minutes on medium heat, whisking constantly.
  • Pour the hot chocolate into a mug, top with whipped cream and grated chocolate.
  • For the final touch, cut a small opening in the bottom of the marshmallow. Then, toast the marshmallow and stick the wafer using the tiny cut. Finish inserting the wafer in the whipped cream and toodily-doo! You have a delicious hot chocolate a la Ned Flanders!
